2007 PRO BONO SERVICE AWARDS

The Pro Bono Service Awards recognize the efforts of attorneys in Hillsborough County who have made exceptional pro bono contributions.  The volunteer attorneys recognized today have provided free legal services to indigent Hillsborough County residents through a variety of organized pro bono projects.

In 1993, the Supreme Court of Florida rendered an opinion encouraging Florida attorneys to annually donate 20 hours of free legal assistance or contribute a minimum of $350 to a legal services organization.  Last year, many Hillsborough County attorneys met or exceeded the aspirational goals set by the Court.  In 2006, local attorneys donated thousands of hours of free legal services and contributed more than $250,000 to support Hillsborough County’s only legal aid program, Bay Area Legal Services.

H.A.V.E. A HEART

In 1994, the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit established a circuit-wide pro bono program.  The name of the program is H.A.V.E. a Heart, for Hillsborough Attorneys Volunteer Efforts.  The program is monitored by a local pro bono committee, chaired by the Honorable James M. Barton, II, and administered by the Bay Area Volunteer Lawyers Program.

H.A.V.E. a Heart encompasses all organized pro bono projects in Hillsborough County, including the Domestic Violence Assistance Project, the Guardian Ad Litem Program, Ask A Lawyer, Federal Litigation Project, Teen Court, USF Legal Aid Program, and all of Bay Area’s pro bono projects, including, Community Counsel, Case Referral Panel, Family Forms Clinic, and Client Intake Panel.

THE JIMMY KYNES PRO BONO AWARD

The Award is intended to encourage and recognize those Hillsborough County attorneys who have made significant contributions to ensure legal services are available to persons who otherwise could not afford them. It is dedicated to the memory of former General Counsel to Jim Walters Corporation, Jimmy Kynes.

Following the establishment of Bay Area’s Volunteer Lawyers Program in 1982, Mr. Kynes worked with the Program to recruit members of the Hillsborough County Bar Association to provide pro bono assistance.  Through his efforts, over many years, private attorneys, including corporate counsel from local companies, were recruited to interview and advise indigent clients at monthly client intake sessions.

Jimmy Kynes’ commitment to the provision of pro bono services in the community is reflected by and continues through the efforts of the recipients of the Jimmy Kynes Pro Bono Award.  This year’s Award recipient is Danelle Dykes Barksdale.

The following Hillsborough County attorneys have received the Award: Hon. James Barton, II, Michael Bedke, Karen Buesing, Ricardo Fernandez, Tiny Geiger, Margaret Mathews, Jack McGrath, Kathleen McLeroy, Andrew O’Malley, Hala Sandridge, Robert Shimberg, Scott Stichter, Harold Youmans, and Gwynne Young.
