How do I apply to Bay Area Legal Services for legal help?

Am I eligible for legal assistance?

	You must be living in one of the five Bay Area Legal Services counties: Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Manatee, or Sarasota or be referred to Bay Area by another legal services program.
	You must have a civil legal issue of the type handled by Bay Area Legal Services. Bay Area cannot assist with criminal or traffic matters. Also, you must not have a conflict with a current or prior client represented by Bay Area. This means your case will not be accepted if it would create a conflict of interest for Bay Area. For example: Bay Area will not provide legal assistance to both a husband and wife in a divorce action.
	Your household income must be at or below 125 percent of the poverty level as established by the federal government. There are some exceptions to the income guidelines. Different eligibility guidelines may apply for seniors, victims of domestic violence, and those that qualify for special programs. You will be screened for eligibility when you call. Be prepared to provide information and proof of your monthly household income and information about your assets.

To apply for legal assistance, call Bay Area's Legal Helpline at 813-232-1343 (Hillsborough residents) or 1-800-625-2257.

Bay Area staff cannot provide legal assistance by e-mail. So, please do not apply or send legal questions to Bay Area by e-mail. If you have a court date or other deadline, please provide that information when you apply. If you are given an office appointment, please bring all papers that relate to your case when you come to the office for an interview. Please understand that many eligible residents request legal assistance, however, Bay Area cannot accept every case due to our limited resources.
